          Biography

          Emma Genevieve Gillette was one of Michigan’s most successful citizen activists.

          Born to David Gillette and Kitty Beal, on a farm near Lansing, in May of 1898, Genevieve gained an understanding and appreciation of nature at an early age. From her Grandmother Beal she acquired her love of plants, and from her beloved father came her deep sense of stewardship for the environment.

          The intrinsic beauty of the landscape that Genevieve experienced with her father on spring walks in the family’s farm woodlot on the banks of the Grand River made a lasting impression. She
