Early Life and Imprisonment
The Birdman of AlcatrazRobert Franklin Stroud, later known as the "Birdman of Alcatraz," was born in Seattle, Washington, in 1890.
He left home at a young age and eventually settled in the Alaskan town of Cordova in 1908. There, he met Kitty O'Bryan, a dance hall performer and prostitute. Their relationship led to Stroud's arrest for the murder of Charlie von Dahmer in 1909.
Despite claiming self-defense, Stroud was convicted and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
He was transferred to McNeil Island Penitentiary, where he began his lifelong journey with birds.
